QoS-aware Packet Chunking Schemes for M2M Cloud Services

  With the recent emergence of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications, a huge number of devices are connected and massive amounts of traffic are exchanged. However, since M2M applications typically generate packets of very small size, it will happen that the number of incoming packets is larger than the maximum number of packets the router can handle per second, thereby decreasing network throughput. That is, the network resource cannot be used efficiently. Therefore, M2M cloud network operator will make chunk of these small packets, but a waiting time for chunking is inevitable, and thus application requirement may not be satisfied. This paper proposes a new packet chunking scheme to both meet the application requirement and improve the router’s achievable throughput. The proposed scheme needs multiple buffers and then classifies the arrival packets to one of buffer based on their acceptable waiting time. After that, the chunk packet is made based on the attribute of each packet to meet the application requirements. Through simulation experiments, we have shown that the proposed scheme attains the excellent performance even in cases of the overloaded and the imbalanced traffics.
