Node Location-Dependent Remaining TTL-Based Buffer Management for Delay Tolerant Networks

  DTN (Delay and disruption Tolerant Networking) adopts the store-carry-and-forward paradigm where each node has a buffer storage to store messages for long time waiting for an appropriate forwarding opportunity until an expiration time (TTL) will come to each message. This paper proposes a practical scheme on buffer management by adequately combining known techniques to fit in an island scenario, in which the source and the destination are located in two separated areas (e.g., islands) that are connected by limited relay nodes (e.g., ferry-boat). To deliver each message from the ferry-boat to the destination fast but efficiently, a history-based forwarding is used. To eliminate avoidable message expiration on the ferry-boat, a node location-dependent remaining TTL-based buffer management is proposed. In short, we roughly estimate the expected time for a message to reach its destination depending on the location and compare that time and the remaining TTL of the message.
