Transmission Channel Switching Based on Channel Utilization in ROD-SAN

  In the future, wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs) are expected to provide frameworks for various services such as the Internet of things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. To efficiently provide such services, WSANs require high response levels as well as power saving functionalities. To facilitate this, we apply radio-on-demand (ROD) technology to the wireless local area network (WLAN) proposed in our previous work in order to create a WSAN that provides low latency and reduced power consumption. In a WSAN that incorporates ROD technology, each sensor node has a dedicated wake-up receiver that is used to receive wake-up signals. Since a sleeping sensor switches to active mode when it receives a wake-up signal from its neighboring sensors, the method used to select an appropriate channel is a very important consideration. Herein, we propose a channel selection scheme that can provide the effective sensor node channel utilization by using the channel utilizati on average. Then, based on simulations, we show how our scheme is capable of decreasing node transmission delays while simultaneously increasing a packet delivery ratio.
