  TCP was designed primarily for wired networks. Many of its mechanisms are therefore well suited for wired networks. Wireless networks have very different characteristics in terms of latency, jitter and error rate as compared to wired networks. Such characteristics are generally known to adversely affect TCP’s performance. As wireless internet is increasingly popular, the performance of TCP over wireless links will therefore be a very significant subject to investigate. Next generation cellular telecommunication system, standardized as IMT-2000, based its data communication on IP, and is thought to be one of the main access methods for future Internet. In this study, we focus on error rate of the wireless cellular links, and investigate the effect of various parameters of TCP and IMT-2000 on throughput performance. We are especially interested in finding out how packet size influences throughput on such media, whether there is an optimum packet size, how the choice of TCP version affect throughput performance and what is the influence of IMT-2000’s data rate on TCP’s throughput. From our simulation results, we found that Tahoe performs better than NewReno and SACK for certain environment. We show that there are optimum packet sizes, which change according to data rate and TCP version. We also show that data rates affect the performance of TCP in regard to increasing value of BER.
