Avoiding Packet Losses at TCP Slow Start in Gigabit Networks

  Ramping up session transmission speed quickly is paramount due to an array of reasons. Iterative applications typically experience application limited (idle) periods, sending the session to a new slow start round repetitively. Being able to quickly resume transmission at an appropriate rate for the application is key to user experience. Moreover, applications with short lived flows, such as Web Server transactions, are becoming ever more common, so the exponential ramp up of the cwnd provided by the Slow Start TCP mechanism is more than justified. However, the exponential rate increase of slow start, combined with the self-pace characteristic of TCP (i.e.,cwnd adjustments are executed at ack reception times) causes a burst of packet losses at the transition from SS to Congestion Avoidance, forcing the CA algorithm in use to recover from multiple packet losses. Limited slow start RFC 3742 provides a mechanism to limit the size of the congestion window. However, for very high speed networks, the mechanism may result in low throughput when bandwidth is abundant. In this talk, we will address how the congestion window can increase quickly to large values during slow start so as to provide fast ramp up but yet avoid massive packet losses at the slow start to congestion avoidance transition.
