Mission
This proposal, entitled Resilient Edge Cloud Designed Network (RECN), aims to establish a vigorous partnership between City University of New York, City College (CCNY) in USA and Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech) in Japan. On December 9, 2016, CCNY and Kyutech exchanged a memorandum of understanding (M.O.U) to promote joint research, exchange of academic material and academic publications, exchange of faculty members for research, discussions and lectures, and exchange of students for study and research. Since then the two institutions have been collaborating together.
 
Objective
The objective of the project is to conduct between the two Institutions collaborative and foundational research on a resilient edge cloud designed network to achieve basic understanding of the underlying science for future RECN. This work will cover issues of security, heterogeneity, resource constraints and potential mobility of end devices/sensors. A backbone network will be implemented and diversity of access network technologies, availability/placement of computing resources and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements will be examined. The RECN Group will focus on two key challenges:
  1. Architecture, Resource access, virtualized adaptable computing and networking, network security, and distributed database using hypercube
  2. Real-life, emulation and simulation of large scale Internet of Things (IoT) with application to smart grid
Research items
As shown in Fig. 1, we have divided the effort into 4 tasks. The 4 tasks consists of Resilient Resource Access for Massive End Devices (Task1), Virtualized Adaptable Computing and Networking (Task2), Bio-Inspired Intrusion Detection System (BIOIDS) for Protecting Internet of Things Devices (Task3), and Distributed Database using Hypercube (Task4), while all tasks will be experimented on the testbed experiments with application to smart city and smart grid (Testbed Experiment). Each of the four tasks is being conducted by a team of researchers from the two partner institutions.
